PayOffway is an independent educational website about credit card debt in the United States. It exists to help people understand what they owe, what it costs, and what their options are, in plain English and without hype.
Credit card debt is confusing. Interest is charged daily, rules differ from state to state, and many of the ads and search results you see are written to sell you something. We try to do the opposite: explain how things work, show the math, point to official sources and tell you where the risks are.
What you’ll find here
- Payoff strategies: how to pay down cards, the debt snowball and avalanche methods, and how to choose between them.
- How interest works: how card interest is calculated, and a free payoff calculator you can use yourself.
- Balance transfers and loans: how 0% offers work, what they cost, and how consolidation and personal loans compare.
- Relief options: hardship programs, nonprofit debt management plans, settlement and bankruptcy, and how to spot scams.
- Your rights and the law: debt collection rules, statutes of limitations by state, and what happens to credit card debt when someone dies.
How we work
We follow a few rules for every article.
- Official sources first. We rely on federal agencies and courts, such as the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Federal Reserve, the IRS and the U.S. Courts. When we describe a company’s product, we use what the company publishes on its own website, and we say so.
- Dated figures. Rates, fees and offers change often. Each article lists its sources and says when its figures were checked.
- Clearly labeled examples. Our numerical examples are hypothetical, calculated by us, and we state the assumptions behind them. They show how the math works. They aren’t predictions or offers.
- No guarantees. We don’t promise savings, approvals or results. When something varies by state or by person, we say so.
- Plain language. We aim to explain things the way you’d want them explained, without jargon or pressure.
- Corrections. If you find a mistake or something out of date, please write to us and we’ll look at it.
What we are not
PayOffway is not a lender, a card issuer, a debt relief company or a credit counseling agency. We aren’t financial advisors, attorneys or tax professionals. We don’t make loans, negotiate with your creditors or sell debt services, and we don’t recommend specific lenders, cards or debt relief companies. The content is for general information, and it isn’t financial, legal or tax advice. Please read our Legal Disclaimer and Terms of Use.
For decisions about your own situation, talk to a qualified professional, such as a nonprofit credit counselor, a licensed attorney or a tax professional.
